How Does Reiki Work?

Reiki, pronounced ray-key, is a natural energy healing technique for stress reduction and relaxation. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words, simply translated as "Universal Life Force Energy". Reiki is one of the many holistic methods of healing which uses the body's natural ability to heal itself.

Reiki is a safe, gentle, non-intrusive system for balancing, healing and harmonizing all aspects of the body, mind and emotions. It works to restore the healthy balanced flow of Life Force Energy by creating a deep state of relaxation and release. Life Force Energy is the energy that flows through and animates all living things. It nourishes the cells and organs of the body, supporting their vital functions and allows messages to pass from the brain through the nervous system. This energy is the Mind-Body-Spirit connection. It is the body's innate ability to heal itself.

When the flow of energy in the body is high and balanced, we feel healthy, strong and able to enjoy life. When it is disrupted, stagnant or blocked, we eventually experience physical illness, mental dysfunction or emotional pain.

Reiki works synergistically with all other healing methods in promoting health and maintaining balanced wellness. Reiki is NOT religion and does not involve ESP, unusual psychic phenomena and is not a form of psychic healing.

What Happens in a Reiki Session?

The atmosphere in the room is designed to promote peaceful relaxation. At the beginning of a Reiki session, your Reiki therapist will discuss your concerns, goals and progress with you. Then she will do a brief energy assessment. Your therapist will not make any diagnosis of any medical or psychological condition.

During the treatment, you will lie comfortably on a therapy table, fully clothed. The therapist will place hands lightly on or slightly above your body, over various energy centers and pathways. The session will last an hour of more, depending on your individual needs.

During the session you experience a deep state of relaxation, similar to meditation. As you relax, you may feel gentle warmth, cooling or very mind tingling sensations. You may even fall asleep. Clients often report that they feel very relaxed and balanced after a session, while also feeling a great sense of energy and well-being.

What Are the Benefits of Reiki?

What People are Saying about Reiki

"Energy medicine is going to be one of the major medical developments of the 21st century... This includes the kinds of energy…produced by Energy Healers."

Andrew Weil, M.D., Prevention Magazine, 2000

We're beginning now to understand things that we know in our hearts are true but we could never measure. As we get better at understanding how little we know about the body, we begin to realize that the next big frontier in medicine is energy medicine. ...It's understanding for the first time how energy influences how we feel."

Mehmet Oz, M.D., Cardiac Surgeon and Founder of Complementary Medicine, New York Presbyterian Hospital, Oprah Winfrey Show, 2006

"energy medicine is medicine based on the appreciation that living systems have energy fields inside of them and around them and that these fields play important roles in ...regulating processes that are going on inside the organism."

James Oschman, M.D., Author, Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis, Oprah Winfrey Show, 2007
