Meet Shannon
I began to discover my intuition for touch during a difficult time in my 20s when I was struggling with depression. I was withdrawn and would lie in bed feeling very sad. Getting up and out of my apartment was just too much sometimes. It was then that I had a seemingly small yet truly transformative experience.
One of the tenants in the apartment building I was living in moved and left behind his cat. The property manager decided to allow the abandoned cat to wander around his office and it wasn’t long before he was coming to visit me. I am allergic to cats and was conditioned not to pet them, but this little guy would come up to me on the bed and lay down right in front of my sad face.
He was abandoned and I was depressed. We needed each other. So, despite my allergies, I began petting him, and I discovered that I felt a little better each time. I began to feel more grounded, and it was then that I came to realize the power of touch. Eventually, the property manager took the cat to live with him, but I never forgot how deeply beneficial my encounter with that cat had been for both of us.
As time passed, I would get visits from friends who would seek my help when they had health issues. After helping one of my friends recover from a serious wound that developed after he had been bitten by a brown recluse spider, I was inspired to learn more about the human body and how it heals.
I enrolled in the Potomac Massage Training Institute’s six week Heart of Touch program where I learned anatomy and specific massage techniques for relaxation and pain relief. I then entered into the institute’s 600 hour massage training program and graduated in August of 2005 with a specialization in integrated Swedish and Deep Tissue Massage.
As I continued to learn more about how we heal, I studied and added Medicinal Aromatherapy to my practice. Aromatherapy is a form of treatment that uses the complex chemical systems of plants (Essential Oils) to foster and support the body’s own healing system.
The combination of massage, intuitive touch and aromatherapy offers a powerful way to promote and maintain healing by increasing blood circulation, stimulating immune function and removing toxins. Balance and energy are restored as cells rejuvenate and organs regain proper function.
I am deeply grateful for the body’s amazing ability to heal itself and to share that healing with my clients. Now a certified Oncology Massage practitioner, I have become even more convinced of nature’s power to heal. I believe we are experiencing a revolution in which complimentary medicine will become the norm rather than the exception, and I am excited to be a part of that development.
In my current practice I work with all age groups, and I experience a real sense of joy when I see my clients breathing easier, feeling better, sleeping well and living with less pain.
When not at work, I enjoy my role as a drummer for a Baltimore based heavy metal band. My husband is in the band too, and we love our life in the city.
