About Acupuncture

Back

Acupuncture was developed as a healing art in China thousands of years ago. One of the basic concepts underlying this system of medicine is “qi” (pronounced chee). Qi is not easy to translate into English. It is often characterized as “energy”, but qi is both matter and energy. Everything is made of qi and qi is also the vital force that animates everything.

Qi flows through us among pathways, called meridians, and can be accessed and manipulated by inserting tiny needles at specific points on these pathways. Because matter and energy are fluid (that is, it is all qi), these points can influence us at any level of the body, mind or spirit.

Most patients report feeling more positive, less anxious or stressed in addition to the symptom relief they often experience from the treatments. People who receive regular acupuncture get sick less often because acupuncture stimulates the immune system. Also, a study has shown that 84% of acupuncture patients see their MDs less; 79% use fewer prescription drugs; and 70% of those to whom surgery had been recommended said they avoided it.

Acupuncture has been cited by the World Health Organization to treat over 43 conditions, including allergies, asthma, back pain, carpal tunnel, colds and flu, constipation, depression, gynecological disorders, headache, heart problems, infertility, insomnia, pre-menstrual syndrome, sciatica, sports injuries, tendonitis and stress.

Clinical studies indicate that acupuncture is effective in treating migraine, dysmenorrhea, fibromyalgia, stroke, substance abuse, symptoms of menopause, neck pain, morning sickness, tennis elbow and facial pain.

Acupuncture is a cost-effective system of medicine – a number of studies have shown that people who use acupuncture recover faster from serious illnesses like strokes, can often avoid surgery, spend less time in the hospital, have less sick days, and are able to return to work more quickly following an injury or illness.

Acupuncture can support you in your recovery from drug and alcohol abuse as well. Center Point Healing offers acudetox treatments and a special smoking cessation program for groups and individuals.

The needles are solid, stainless steel and are nearly as thin as a human hair. They are all single-use, which means each needle is individually wrapped, sterile and disposed of after use. Some patients report feeling sensations at the points of insertion or in other parts of their bodies, but the treatment is usually not painful.
